RUS Roofing’s Workmanship & Materials Warranties

Here’s a little secret in the roofing industry: Not all warranties are created equal! It’s important to know the difference. It’s very easy to be impressed by the extensive warranties offered by some roofing companies – at least until something goes wrong. That’s when you’ll find out that their warranty doesn’t cover what you thought it did. It’s important that you know the difference between workmanship warranties and materials warranties and what those warranties actually cover.

Workmanship Warranties

Roofing salespeople will often say things like “this roof has a 50 year warranty,” but that only covers the shingles. If your roof starts leaking within a few years because of an installation problem, you’ll probably end up all wet. That’s because most roofing contractors in the the Greater Cincinnati area only offer 2 year workmanship warranties. Some companies will offer to extend a workmanship warranty, but only if you pay a premium price for it.

RUS Roofing Workmanship Warranty

RUS Roofing is so confident of our workmanship that we recently upgraded our standard workmanship warranty from 5 years to 10 years! The warranty states that if you have ANY type of issue arising from the installation of your residential roof in the next 10 years, we’ll fix it. Period.

And that’s our standard warranty. You won’t pay a penny extra for it.

What’s more, if you have problems arising from a materials defect, we are happy to help file and negotiate the claim with the manufacturer, as well as meet with company inspectors to make sure that your warranty claim is handled with your best interests in mind.

Materials Warranties

Materials warranties are offered by the manufacturer of the roofing materials and cover materials defects. As roofing technology has improved, so have the warranties. RUS Roofing can now offer shingles and tiles with warranties ranging from 20 years to Limited Lifetime Warranties.

Non-prorated period

At some point in time roofing manufacturers won’t cover the full cost of replacing your shingles and will, instead, prorate the remaining value of those shingles. Different manufacturers offer different non-prorated periods for different quality shingles and tiles – typically 3 to 20 years or more.

What happens if you sell your house? Will you be able to say your roof is still under warranty? Warranties can usually be transferred just once within the non-prorated period as long as the manufacturer is made aware of the transfer. After the pro-rated period, the transfer can still be made, but the warranty time period may change.

What’s not covered?

Here it’s important to read the fine print. Acts of God are not typically covered (instead, you should contact your insurance company). Putting a roof on a business or other non-residence will typically shorten your warranty. Applying shingles on top of another layer of shingles will void your warranty. Replacement costs other than the shingles (e.g., underlayment, flashings, metal work, tear-off, etc.) may or many not be covered, but typically not.

RUS Roofing can help inform you about different warranty options, but always read the fine print for yourself before making a final decision.
